Mito

- Kairaku-en garden

“ I want to make a place of entertainment for all citizens” was the wish of Nariaki Tokugawa, the 9th lord of Mito who built the garden in 1842. From the Meiji era, it is considered as one of the tree most beautiful garden in Japan including Kenrokuen garden in Kanazawa, and Korakuen garden in Okayama. More than 3000 plum trees of 100 different species have been planted in the garden and many visitor come to admire their blooming. Actually, it is says that the garden was designed according to the philosophy of Yin and Yang. At the beginning of spring, sun is shining, and the plum trees blossom, this is the world of “Yang”; but it is also plenty of serenity, quiet and deep, this is the world of “Yin”. Admiring this contrast is one of many ways to enjoy the unique charm of Kairaku-en.
