Tokyo Cycling Courses departing from Ueno sta.

From Ueno

Located on the north side of Tokyo Station, the famous Ueno park has some well-known temples such as Benzaiten, located on the island of Shinobazu Lake, which was founded during the 17th century and  Kanei-ji Temple which is Tokugawa Shogun family's temple.
The Ueno Park's cultural facilities include the Tokyo National Museum, which displays Japanese masterpieces, and the National Museum of Western Art, which houses the works of modern masters such as Van Gogh and Picasso, the National Science Museum, Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, Ueno Zoo, The cultural and educational facilities such as Tokyo Bunka Kaikan and Tokyo Art University are concentrated.
The area along the track around Ueno Station is a popular downtown along with Asakusa, where inn, dining rooms, clothing stores are lined up. And also a wide variety of food, clothing, accessories are sold in the outdoor market Ameya Yokocho has become one of the popular walking spots. 

Cycling course examples


1) Traditional districts Course: Ueno → Yanaka (Yanesen)-Asakusa

This course is suitable if you want to experience traditional Japanese cityscape.
Yanaka, Nezu, Sendagi,  from each intial syllable of these three district together were used as the nickname of Yanesen, leaving a good old Japanese cityscape in the high economic growth period.
By matching the landscape, cafes, restaurants and boutiques with nostalgic  atmosphere have been increasing in recent years and become the hottest spots.

It goes without saying that Asakusa is a typical downtown area of ​​Tokyo where is best known place as typical downtown.
In addition to popular tourist attractions such as Senso-ji Temple, Nakamise Shopping District, Sumida Park and Hoppy Street, the area is full of various tourist resources such as visiting Asakusa Seven Lucky Gods and visiting Aibahashi Tools Town.
You can also book a cruiseship going down the Sumida River and Tokyo Bay with your bike.

2) Seaside course: Ueno - Tsukiji - Tsukudajima - Odaiba

In Ueno, especially the area of Ueno park, there are Japan Art Academy, Ueno Zoo, many museums where you feel the cultural and academic atomosphere in the nature.
In Tsukiji, even the fish market has been moved to Toyosu in October 2018, but the Tsukiji outer market has not been moved. There are many good restaurants (Sushi, Italian,....) using fresh seafoods, and there are many shops of delicacies as Himono (salted and air-dried fish) or Nori (seaweeds) where you can enjoy shopping with nice conversation with shoppers. 
Tsukudajima is known by Tsukudani (preserved food, simmered in soy sauce and mirin). It is a man-made island made by reclamation work of fishers who moved from Osaka in the beginning of Edo period. This place is the original place of the fish market in Tsukiji.
And Tsukishima is not far from Tsukudajima and there are not only monjayaki (a type of solty pancake eaten in Kanto area) restaurants but also many restaurants. This is a recommendable area for your lunch.
In Odaiba, there are many interesting places as some huge shopping centres and a big wheel (Kanransha in Japanese), and there is also a real sized Gundam. So if you visit by bicycle, you take advantage of visiting many places!
In this course, you can see new and old-fashioned big city Tokyo.
 

3) Ueno - Yushima Tenmangu, Kanda Myōijin, Yushima Seidō - Imperial Palace - Tokyo Tower

Yushima Tenmangu is a shinto shrine also called as Yushima Tenjin and it is a designated as a cultural property of Tokyo city, and dedicated Sugawara no Michizane, a famous scholar and considered as a god of Learning. That is why there are so many students come to pray for their wishes to pass the examinations especiallly at the collegen entrance examination timing, but in general, the shrine is crowded by students all the time.
Kanda Myōijin shrine is the ujigami (the guardian god) of 108 town associations as Kanda, Nihonbashi, Akihabara, Otemachi, and so on. It is also the Shrine where Kanda matsuri festival takes place.
Yushima Seidō temple close to Kanda Myōijin had been a state-run school under the control of the shogunate during Edo period, and it is called as the "birthplace of school education". It is why many students come to pray through the year as like Yushima Tenmangu.
And Kokyo (The Imperial Palace) is surrounded by nature but located in the centre of Tokyo. It is considered as an urban oasis so that many people come their for the jogging and walking on the sidewalk along the moat.
The Tokyo tower is a symbolic tower of the city of Tokyo. It is fun to look at Tokyo from the observatory, and there are many restaurants and souvenir shops inside.
So this route is recommended for the cyclists who wish to enjoy the nature and temples of a big city like Tokyo.

Kamakura - Enoshima Cycling Course

Kamakura flourished as the capital city of samurai 800 years ago.
While it is a historical area with many shrines and temples that show a unsophisticated but powerful appearance like the capital of Samurai, many tourists visit because of the good location by less than an hour from Tokyo central, and in recent years, fashionable restaurants and cafes and boutiques are also growing its number.
Kamakura is also close to the beach of Shonan and popular with young people, maybe rare in historical districts, and many young people are enjoying walking.
However, on weekends and holidays, there is a lot of traffic on the roads and local trains are packed up with full of people, so sometimes you made waited an hour outside the shops.
With bicycles, you can enjoy sightseeing nothing to do with people like that, and steep terrain is beaten by electric assist, so you can have fun.

In addition to this, fell the resort by cycling along the sea by taking a sea breeze. If the weather permits, you can observe Mt. Fuji over the sea.

And don't forget Enoshima, which is said to be the Japanese  Mont Saint Michel. This island, which protrudes from Sagami Bay, where Ryujin is worshiped, has been the object of faith gathering many worshipers, but today it has been replaced by tourists and becoming "photogenic" spot. Kawagoe cycling course

Kawagoe is called "Koedo(Little Edo)",  is one of the few towns that still have a view of the Edo period.
The old city area is set as an important traditional buildings preservation area.

Before Edo became the center of Japan, Kawagoe was called "the mother of Edo" that surpassed Edo.
It was also called "the kitchen of Edo" because Shigashi-gawa(Shingashi River) and Iruma-gawa(Iruma-River) flows in Kawagoe and not only famous sweet potato and sayama tea, but also crops in northern Kanto gathered in.
Today, more than 7 million tourists visit every year, and the popularity is rising in overseas.

Once you move to Kawagoe Station by train, let's start cycling.
Not only the traditional storehouses of the Edo period, but also there are the building which were built in first half of the twentieth century, and in the middle and second half of the twentieth century, so you can observe transition the concept of architecutre in this 200years at the same time.
In addition, the candy store Yokocho, an alley where traditional Japanese candy stores gathers ,which hardly see in current days and the ”Bell Tower", which was used to tell a time in Japan instead of clocks.
Kawagoe Festival, which is full of attractions, and “Kawagoe Festival Hall” displays gorgeous floats.
Furthermore, Kawagoe, which focuses on sightseeing, has stylish cafes and Japanese-style goods stores that make use of old buildings, so it would be nice to stop your bicycle and take a break or have a snack time.
You can also take your bicycle to reach "Kawagoe Hikawa Shrine", located a little away from the center by foot, or the "Kitain" with a history of more than 1200 years, and the "Kawagoe Castle Honmaru Goten" which remains as it was.

Yokohama, a city where Eastern and Western cultures are entangled, where the old meets the new, has various faces. 
As the Harbor View Park, the Yamashita park, the Red Brick Warehouse and Yokohama"s Chinatown are not far from each other, you can easily go around by bicycle. After having a walk around Yamashita Park, that offers a beautiful on the historical Yokohama Port, why not get off the bike to wander around Chinatown and enjoy some delicious Chinese food?
The Harbor View Park, which used to be an area where a lot of foreigners settled when the harbor first opened, has now become a very popular spot for dates. There are about 4500 roses in the park, and you can enjoy the view of Yokohama Harbor and the Yokohama Bay Bridge from the observation deck. On the way from the park to the Yamate Catholic Church, there are many beautiful Western Style buildings builtin the early 1900s, we recommend that you stop for a while to give it a closer look!

If you go down the slop on the left side of the harbor, you will arrive in Yokohama's Chinatown. Not only are there a lot of delicious restaurants, but you can also find many fortune telling stalls and souvenir shops. While being in Japan, you might have the illusion of travelling in China. 

After this, you can go to the Yamashita park and enjoy a nice walk, you can also visit the Hikawa Maru boat, a famous Japanese ocean liner. Then, if you head North West going through the Zou-no-hana Park (litterally the Elephant Nose Park), you will exit the park in front of the Red Brick Warehouse. On the way, you can stop by the Yokohama Archives of History to learn the history of the port since its opening.

The Red Brick Warehouse is a stylish warehouse area that has been renovated and is always busy with fun events held all year round. If you keep on walking around, you will discover the modern city of Yokohama. As there are many attractions such as the Cup Noodle Museum and Yokohama Cosmo World, an amusement park in a modern urban atmosphere, you are free to continue pedaling or stop to visit these places if you feel like it. There is no doubt you will be entertained by Yokohama's attractions.
