Japan's largest national park: Daisetsuzan National Park

2019年 07月24日

North of Japan, right in the heart of Hokkaido Island, not far from the city of Asahikawa, is the largest national park in the country. With around 230,000 hectares of natural treasure, Daisetsuzan National Park is a true paradise for nature lovers.

Created in 1934, this national park includes countless volcanic mountain ranges, some of which are still active, such as:

the Shikaribetsu Volcanic Group, located in the eastern part of the park;

the volcanic group Daisetsuzan, lying north of the park.

Mount Asahi is the highest peak in the park, it rises to a height of about 2,300 meters and is nicknamed the "roof of Hokkaido".

The Daisetsuzan national park, extremely volcanic, is composed of a fauna and a very particular flora. Land of the park is covered by cooled lava, where trees and flowers of various species or unique animals cohabit. Hopefully you can see the famous owl of Blakiston, one of the largest owls in the world that can measure 70 centimeters.

Many facilities, such as a cable car or hiking trails, have been created to show visitors all the secrets of the national park.

Do you particularly like waterfalls or mountain lakes? If yes, you will be satisfied! Close to the town of Furano, along the Nunobe River is a series of waterfalls surrounded by the surrounding forest.
To the west, in the Higashi Daisetsu area, are the lakes of Shikaribetsu and Nukabira. They are easily accessible as it is possible to reach them directly via a national road and also with JR Obihiro or Shintoku lines.

Because the Daisetsuzan National Park belongs to an active volcanic area, many hot springs flow directly from the mountains. These sources feed the different onsen of the region.

After your visit to the Daisetsuzan National Park, why not stop in an onsen to rest?
