Oshinohakkai: The traditional village with views of Mount Fuji

2019年 02月19日

Oshinohakkai means: Oshino village springs, possessing 8 ponds. It is one of the places where pilgrims go to Mount Fuji, and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of "Fujisan, a sacred place and source of artistic inspiration".

The village is located in the Fuji 5 lakes area, between Lake Kawaguchiko and Yamanakako. Those ponds filled with the melting snow of Mt. Fuji filtered by the underground lavas and springs out of the soil which takes 20 years. The water is defecated. So that we can see the fish swimming in the pounds extremely clear from the edge of the pond. In addition, the landscape of these clear-water ponds lined with thatched farmhouses and Mt. Fuji in the background is unparalleled. These traditional houses, known in Japanese as Kayabuki, are similar to the famous houses of Shirakawago village in Gifu, houses protecting the inhabitants from the harsh winter climate. In Oshinohakkai, there is an open air museum "the Hannoki Bayashi Shiryokan" where you can admire farming tools, samurai weapons and so on.

It is also recommended to taste yomogidango (rice cake with mugwort) that can be bought in souvenir shops and enjoy hot on the way.
