Towada Lake

A destination of choice in autumn, there is nothing like visiting Aomori prefecture in the aftermath of the hot summer days to admire the change of season. Towada is mainly famous for its lake, a gigantic expanse of water appeared several hundred thousand years ago after the explosive eruptions of Mount Towada. Around it, vast maples forests seem to extend to infinity.
In summer, the landscape is green, in autumn, it is adorned with a thousand colors. The Japanese maple or momiji has the particularity of having very thin leaves, and which according to the species are colored from a light yellow to bright red. The lake has many more beaches and islets covered with this unique vegetation in the world. Usually at the end of October to witness this show. You will also find around the lake pretty wooden cottages where to spend the night in the middle of nature. These offer the possibility to rent canoes or fishing equipment to fish for Kokanee: the "legendary salmon" of this part of Japan. The lake once possessed no form of life in its depths, and this species of salmon introduced into the lake was one of the only species to adapt to it.
