Winter art at Sapporo snow festival (Hokkaido)

2019年 11月13日

This year again, the mesmerizing snow festival will be held in Sapporo city, in the North of Japan, on the Huge Hokkaido island. It will run from 02/04/2020 to 02/11/2020, so save the date !

Thanks to the area's icy temperatures, huge ice and snow sculptures will be exposed in Sapporo's Susukino district along the vast Odori park, accessible in a 10 minute walk from the station.

The best way to admire those masterpieces, sometimes as big as a building, is to go during the night when they're illuminated. Since the lights go out at 11 pm, you might want to wear your warmest clothes.
Historical monuments, mythological animals, Buddha statues, and many other surprises await you at the festival.
You can even enjoy the snow made playgrounds and many other activities, especially at the Tsudome site (9 am to 5 pm) : slides, labyrinths, snowman building fields, hot food...

Everything for you to enjoy !

The sculptures are made by Sapporo's citizens, companies or even soldiers.

While the first ice sculpture show dates back to 1950 and only had 6 pieces, it attracted 50 000 visitors.
In 2020, the festival will organise a contest between 9 countries.

Enjoying Hokkaido in winter also includes wandering around the Biei blue pond and its ethereal landscape.
