The largest wasabi field in Japan: Daio Wasabi

Wasabi is a globally known ingredient, some people appreciate it, others find its flavor far too strong. But do you really know what wasabi looks like or how do plants grow? If you do not know a little, visit the Japan's largest wasabi field!

In the heart of the Japanese Alps, Nagano prefecture has decided to reveal the secrets of this national treasure in an exceptional setting.

The Japan's largest wasabi field is located in Hodaka, Azumino-chi the place where soba (buckwheats) cultivated and famous among mountaineers. Daiô Wasabi's farm is a farm set down from generation to generation cultivating the wasabi plants since 1915.

15 hectares in the total of wasabi plantations are visitable. It is possible to move freely through this vast terrain thanks to innumerable paths that wind through different fields. For more originality, why not cross the wasabi plantations by a boat? The fields are located along the Sai River, small boat trips are regularly offered. Also the Kurosawa movie, "Yume -Dreams-" was shooted at the site, since the scenery is breathtakingly beautiful.

The entries in the fields are completely free and without reservations. You will only need to plan your trip to the region.

The wasabi plant is a green and white tuber that can be consumed entirety: the stem, the leaves and of course the bulb. Inside the farm you can find many shops selling all kinds of wasabi products. So, after your getaway, why not try a freshly picked wasabi product? It's also the perfect opportunity to taste wasabi beer! The smell may seem strong but the taste is not. Or for the most gourmet wasabi ice cream and also wasabi chocolate can be enjoyed.
