A fireworks display almost 300 years old, Sumida-gawa, Tokyo

In summer, one of the most famous fireworks of Japan takes place in Tokyo. Just above the Sumida River, near Skytree tower, the tallest tower in Japan, 20,000 fireworks are launched each year attracting a million visitors. The Skytree shines with a thousand of lights, thanks to rockets exploding around.

This pyrotechnic show is the oldest in Japan. Dating back to 1732, during the Edo period, its original purpose was to entertain and raise the spirits of the people who were suffering famine. It was not until 1810 that these fireworks became a tradition deeply rooted in Japanese culture, although it turned out that their cancellations had taken place several times until 1978. Since then, the fires of Sumida -gawa are democratized thanks to the opening of Japan to the international.

In order to make this celebration unique, countless foreigners or Japanese people are dressed in traditional Japanese clothes, Yukata. This festival seems the perfect time to wear it! This outfit, wearing the summer, is a light version of the kimono, heavier, wearing the winter. In Tokyo, there are many shops lending traditional outfits and also offering countless small accessories allowing you to customize your clothes at your leisure.
