The sister islands of Japan, the island of Megijima and Ogijima

The islands of Megijima and Ogijima are islands of art. Located just 20 minutes from each other, they offer incredible landscapes and small grains of madness brought by the works of art on display.

These two islands are part of an international art festival called "Setouchi Triennale" taking place in spring, summer and autumn.

When you get off the ferry on the island of Ogijima, you will be greeted by a building of sublime architecture, also serving as waiting room for the next ferry departures.

The Megijima island meaning "the island of the female tree", is also nicknamed Onigashima and translates as "the island of the devil". Indeed, it is said that this island is the nest of demons, with a 400-meter-long cave that was actually dug by the man in the year 100 BC. not far from the top of Mount Washigamin.

Today, the island has innumerable statuses of these demons, called "oni" in Japanese, that you can find around, as well as inside the cave.

Ogijima Island

The neighboring island, Ogijima, meaning "the island of the male tree", has a village built according to very particular methods. The houses are erected on huge stone walls to protect them from the steep slope and strong gusts of wind. These stone walls significantly reduce the space of the alleys, making them very narrow, which gives them a special charm. Also, we call this island, "the cats island", because although their numbers have fallen, these felines populate in large numbers and are the joy of tourists who come to admire them.
