Gunkanjima, abandonned island in Nagasaki

Perhaps you have already seen this place in the film of James Bond Skyfall, this island is appeared to be a hideout of the enemy. The Hashima island is often called as Gunkanjima, because it looks like a shape of a huge warship (Gunkan in Japanese). It is located in 20 km of Nagasaki and we still speak about this island which is seen as a hunted place or historical place, and it is still visited by many people for seeing the ruins of old city abandonned since long time ago.

This island is an old coal mine, and it was the discovered ressorces in Hashima in the beginning of 19th century. The Mitsubishi company started the mining business with the workers from Nagasaki towards the years 1890, then began the construction of accomodations in the island for providing the workers to live there. They built each house equipped the destillers of drinking water supplies. Gradually, it became a veritable city, and they founded schools, gymnasiums, a hospital, markets, and even a cemetery. In the years of 50, this island had more density of the population which should have been, 5300 people in only 6 hectars of surface.

There was a fire in the end of 1950's, and another bigger fire occured and killed 137people in 1973, and it was just one year before of total evacuation from the island. Consequently, in 1974, the coal mine completely closed because of the decreasing the mine activities by the lack of workers. The island has been abandonned for a year and residents should have left all their lives behind. It is now this ghost island is a witness of the people's lives on the island, TV boxes of their abandonned houses, and there are the blackboards with letters of their last lessons.
