The three big cherry trees of Japan
- Taki-zakura from Miharu (Fukushima)
This is a weeping cherry tree that is over 1000 years old. From the bottom of the tree, the pink flowers spread out in all directions which gives the impression that it is a cascade of flowers. ("Taki" is the waterfall in Japanese.)
- Usuzumi-zakura from Neodani (Gifu)
It is a tree that has more than 1500 years in Gifu prefecture. The peculiarity of this cherry tree is the color of the flowers which is the gray color. "Usuzumi" means "clear ink" as we see in Japanese calligraphy or painting.
- Jindai-zakura from Yamataka (Yamanashi)
This cherry tree that is over 2000 years old! The trunk is 10 meters in diameter and the height is 10 meters. It is said that the monk Nichiren (1222-1282) saved him thanks to his prayers.
