Takamatsu is the scenic capital city of the prefecture of Kagawa. Located in the north of Shikoku, the smallest island of the 4 principal islands of Japan, on the edge of the inland sea of Seto.

The park of Ritsurin koen

The Ritsurin koen, located very close to the main station of the city, is the most famous park in Takamatsu, of which the people are proud. A century of intensive works were necessary to achieve the construction and for making it accessible.


75 hectares big, Ritsurin koen has an own beauty, little parcels of the islands reassembled which make beautiful landscape. The crossing of the islands in the garden is available thanks to the bridges which are traditionnal Japanese style accompanied by modern ones make the original aesthetic of this place.

Today, Ritsurin koen is the one of the three most beautiful gardens of Japan.

The udon

Takamatsu is the ideal city for eating udon because it is the speciality of this region. The saki udon, thick noodles cooked in the hot soup, are made by one of the variation of the wheat grown and harvested not far from the centre of the city.

Where ever you go in this city: in the harbour, in the small streets or in the big commercial area, you can taste the saki udon anywhere.

The spritual walking

Since some thousands years ago, Takamatsu has been a famous spot of the spritual pilgrimage particularly appreciated in Japan. This walking of 1300km, called ohenro, is the purpose to travel in the shikoku island by visiting 88 temples. The aim is to track the footsteps of the monk Kûkai, going to the every temple to practice the Sadhana, a spritual path of Buddhist.

Takamatsu comprises many temples which are the parts of this pilgrimage.
